Welcome to this week’s update from Horsham Churches Together.
Please take a moment to read this week’s news update, including a write up of Sunday’ Prayer & Praise in the Park, a special Father’s Day prayer focus this Sunday and an urgent appeal from Horsham Matters and consider how you might help support our local community.
Fresh in our What’s On Guide we have added the Salvation Army’s Table Top sale and their July Messy Church. We’re also looking forward to being part of the Funday Sunday in Horsham Park on 5th July.
Discover all this and more at www.horshamct.org.uk.
On Sunday 14th June, Christians from across Horsham District gathered to sing God’s praises in Horsham Park, and to pray for our town and villages. It was wonderful to see friends enjoying picnics and children chasing bubbles from the bubble machine. During the service, local church leaders lead times of prayer for people moving into new housing developments, households facing hardship, and refugee & asylum seekers. Jon White, from Trafalgar Road Baptist shared the gospel message, encouraging us to find rest in Jesus. Thank you to everyone who made the day possible – stewards, musicians, PA teams and speakers.
Please continue to pray for Horsham District, that our churches would be a blessing to our communities and that many people would come to know the peace and hope found in Christ.
Right now, local families are facing the impossible choice between putting food on the table and covering life’s basic essentials, and many are going without.
Horsham Matters, who supports our community through 15 weekly foodbanks across the district, is urgently appealing for food donations as stocks have fallen to critically low levels. With demand expected to increase over the summer holidays, support from local churches is needed more than ever.
Summer is always a particularly challenging time for many families. When schools close, access to free school meals disappears, and this year families are expected to be especially impacted due to the withdrawal of holiday voucher provision. Demand for foodbank services is likely to rise sharply.
Every donation helps provide practical support and hope to families facing hardship across our district.
If you would like to support this vital work, please visit the Horsham Matters Donation Page for more information. You can help by:
Congratulations to Tom Murray on winning the Trustee of the Year award in the Horsham District Council’s 2026 Volunteer Awards, recognising his dedication and service to the community through Horsham Matters. Tom has served as a trustee at Horsham Matters since 2012 and is also a Permanent Deacon at St John the Evangelist, Horsham.
As part of the national Voluteers’ Week, the awards celebrate the dedication and passion of volunteers across Horsham District, and the positive difference they make in our communities. There were eight award categories, with the awards being presented at an evening celebration by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex Lady Emma Barnard, The High Sheriff of West Sussex, Gary Shipton and Horsham District Council Chair, Cllr Joanne Knowles.
Look out for follow-up posts and interviews on the council’s Facebook page, and for the full list of winners, read the Horsham District volunteers are recognised post on their website.
Rural homelessness is often invisible and fundamentally different from homelessness in towns where help is more concentrated. In rural West Sussex, people are spread across vast areas, living in tents hidden in woodland, cars parked in lay‑bys and other isolated locations. Limited public transport and long distances between services make people extremely hard to support. Poor phone signal, lack of internet access and limited transport mean people may struggle to contact the council or attend appointments.
Despite these barriers, rural homelessness services provided by Turning Tides are making a real difference. Turning Tides is a charity dedicated to ending homelessness in West Sussex. Founded in 1991, it’s grown from a small group of kind-hearted Christians to the largest homelessness charity in the county. Their Mid-Sussex outreach team supported 118 people experiencing homelessness last year with food, supplies, housing advice and more, with 47 of those moved into secure accommodation.
The Move On Housing North teams operate across the rural north of West Sussex, with homes in Storrington, Horsham, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead. Across six properties, we provide safe accommodation for 35 residents. Move On Housing provides a vital stepping stone towards a ‘forever home’. Residents gain experience of managing their own home while benefiting from the reassurance of a key worker and a supportive community. Demand is high, reflecting the urgent need for this service in areas where social housing and affordable private rentals are scarce. Even in this difficult housing market, Turning Tides supported 13 residents to move into their own independent homes last year.
Read Read Obert’s story on the Turning Tides website. Obert is a past Turning Tides client from Horsham, who lost his home following his long-term illness and divorce. Following support, Obert is now in his own accommodation.
